I'm not a professional, but I've had five BKT's and have done lots of research on them. I've gone to only the most experienced stylists (Vincent J., Herve, Leslie and Dennis Roche) and I've tried three different brands (Marcia, Coppola and AGI Maxx).
Each time, my hair did come out smoother and shinier. However, I also experienced some breakage/hair loss from each BKT. Fortunately, I have a ton of hair, so the hair loss is not that noticible. Two of the times, I also had some flaking of the scalp for a week or two following the BKT. Another problem that I have experienced w/BKT's is that it leaves my hair feeling stiff, w/out any movement.
I think that the problem with BKT's (and all straightening systems, for that matter) is that it's impossible to project exactly how they will turn out. An experienced stylist can assess your hair and give you an idea, but they really can't tell you with 100 percent certainty that everything will come out o.k.
In my case, my hair has lots of different textures, so most of it comes out great, but the pieces that are grey and wiry always come out broken and weak. The wiry hairs are mixed in with the others, so it's hard to adjust the iron temp for them.
I don't think that Coppola is any better or worse than the other brands. It sounds like the majority of folks are happy with their BKT's, but it just doesn't work for others. I spoke to a stylist in Seattle who only does BKT's and she said you should think of your first BKT as an experiement. It really responds differently on each person.
After 5 not-so-great BKT's I have finally learned my lesson and choose not to do them, but that does not mean that they won't work well on most people.
