I have been getting my hair TRed by Jay Sung many times over 6 years. During the first 4 years, I traveled from Philadelphia to NYC to his sister's salon, Hidy Hair, to see him. However, a couple of years ago, he moved to Fort Lee, NJ. Whereas I could easily hop an Amtrak that was less than 3 hours round trip to NY, Fort Lee is not accessible to Philly by public transportation, so I had to drive 5 hours round trip. Although I love Jay, it made going to see him a real chore.
I was very nervous about going to someone new, but I needed to find someone easier to get to. So, yesterday, I ventured to the Bronx to see Herve. Although the trip should have been simple (Amtrak to Penn Station, then 2 train to the Bronx), the 2 train stopped running at 96th St due to a power outage, and I had to do a $20 cab ride the rest of the way. I have never been to the Bronx (even though I grew up in Queens and lived in Manhattan as an adult), so I was a bit scared about it. But the area seems to have gentrified quite a bit. I would say it is like Brooklyn 10 years ago, when it first started gentrifying.
Anyway, Herve was lovely. He has a room in his apartment that is set up as a salon, with a hair sink, mirror, and styling chair. The room has lots of windows and sunlight. He gave me a robe, and was focused only on me the whole time, which was nice. Jay had been kind enough to give Herve my TR formula, and it worked out perfectly (no trial and error). Since Herve was working without assistants, and my hair processes quickly, he applied the TR solution in sections, and rinsed it in sections.
He knew I was nervous, and had no problem answering all of my questions.
The process took about 5 hours, which is around the same amount of time that it took with Jay. I thought it might take longer since he did not have an assistant, but since he was not distracted by other customers, it took the same amount of time.
Jay always does a cut included with my TR, but he did not offer and I did not ask. I figured that if I like the TR after the first wash, maybe next time I will do a cut also.
My hair looks great now, but the real test will be after I do my first wash. Even though you really only have to wait 48 hours, I always wait 72 hours. I feel like the extra day helps it get super straight. I am one of the few who loves the pin straight look. So crossing my fingers on the first wash!
