If the permanent color is applied only to the root and not overlapped down through the previously colored hair, you should not have damage from the color. The average time for processing most permanent color is from 35 to 45 minutes. In my opinion 20 minutes is not long enough to process the hair to cover the grey and to properly deposit and lift the hair. Make sure your colorist is using permanent on the root and a demi-permanent on the previously tinted hair. What type of hair straightening do you have?
