I had my first (and only so far) Marcia BKT done in NY on 8/10/08; I'd just done a conditioning sodium hydroxide based relaxer re-touch the previous day (PCJ Original with Coconut oil added). Now, approaching 8 wks later, I just performed another relaxer retouch, and took the following steps to avoid undoing my BKT results (I've been avoiding sodium chloride and sulfates like the plague...except one app of Nexus Humectress which has a tiny(?) amount of sodium chloride as a leave-in with a roller set 2 wks ago...).
At any rate, before retouching the relaxer, I applied a warmed olive oil/coconut oil combo to my new growth (4a/4b) and previously relaxed hair, and then applied Aphogee 2 Min Reconstructor to previously relaxed/BKT'd hair only. I applied vaseline on my scalp (for basing), AND overtop the previously relaxed/BKT'd/conditioned hair...My aim was to try to keep the relaxer creme, its run-off and the neutralizing shampoo (Mizani's Balancing Butter Blend Chelating Shampoo which contains sodium chloride...) from easily getting to & eating through the BKT...(so, how fragile is the BKT anyway? can it be 'eaten through' that easily???)
After rinsing the relaxer thoroughly, I applied the Aphogee 2 min reconstructor (again) + Roux Porosity Control to entire head for about 30 mins. Then neutralized/shampooed scalp & hair 3 times for about 5 mins/shampoo. I'm deep conditioning now with a combo of (warmed) Elasta QP Intense + Redken All Soft Heavy Creme... Will likely set/wrap or air dry with Elasta QP H2O, Biosilk Therapy Leave-In and maybe Paul Mitchell Super Skinny...
I loved the initial look of the BKT results; results post 1st wash have included minimal to no tangles plus a healthier look (No tangles is worth price of gold for me!). But, given the concern of the formaldehyde (primarily), I'm trying to preserve remaining results until close to December before redoing it. (I'm getting married 12/28/08, and want the 2nd BKT mid-December time frame. I also have to travel from Boston to NY for the BKT and have a hectic work & grad school schedule, so for many reasons I need any positive results that really can be attributed to the BKT to last the full 3-4(+) months).
My question: Am I going about this the right way? Are there any other recs you'd make for maximizing BKT results in the face of needing new relaxer retouches in the meantime? (I anticipate maybe one more retouch late November before doing a retouch/BKT just before Christmas & my wedding). On a weekly basis I use warmed olive oil as a pre-shampoo cond, then Marcia's shampoo & condish (Normal formula/my hair is dry), and a deep condish combo of like Smooth Down Butter Treatment/All Soft Condish or Heavy Cream/QP Intense or similar products.
Sorry this is so long, but I'd really appreciate the feedback of whether I'm proceeding advisedly, going overboard, countering myself somewhere, or could benefit from an added step/product of which I'm presently unaware.
Thanks immensely in advance! I'm sure you know I'll appreciate any responses intended to help!
