Hi all. I just returned from my trip to NYC and wanted to give you all an update of my experience at Mai. I have to say, so far I am very pleased with the results. Keep in mind that my hair is very flat right now as I just had it done yesterday. But the people at Mai promised that I would see more volume once I washed it on Sunday.
I was in and out of the salon in two and a half hours. I have medium length, thick, wavy hair which was colored back in March. They charged me the medium length clinic rate which is $350. They also honored their web coupon even though it was Thursday because my initial appointment was on Wednesday but they had to reschedule as they had to close the salon that day. So my total bill (including tax and tip) was $356. Not bad! One thing to keep in mind is that an assitant works on your hair along with your main stylist. I did not think of this ahead of time so I was a bit unsure how to handle the tip. Just something to think about if you decide to go.
The people who work at the salon are very, very nice. I really had a great experience. The only minor complaint that I have is that I was asked to go into a room and put a robe on prior to starting. All of the robes were dirty and had strands of other peoples hair on them. Kind of gross but that is the only negative part of my experience.
I think the thing that I am most impressed with is that my hair actually feels healthier! It is shiny and it does not look like it suffered any damage at all. This is really important to me. I have spent the past two years growing my hair out of a very short cut. I was really afraid of damaging my hair and then being forced to cut it off.
Another great thing about Mai is that they do not force products on you AT ALL. In fact, I asked about a shampoo and conditioner and they simply recommended any shampoo and conditioner for color treated hair. They happen to use Pureology which is what I use anyway.
So if anyone is interested I will post another follow up after I wash my hair on Sunday. The people at Mai said I would not have to blow dry or flat iron after washing. However, my stylist recommended letting my hair air dry and then using a flat iron just to curl under the ends. This is to prevent that unnatural, scarecrow look that you see when hair is pin straight at the ends. I may do that as that look kind of bothers me.
Casey (or anyone else reading this), if you have any questions that I did not cover above, please feel free to email me at firstname.lastname@example.org. Hope this information helps!
