The major difference is the chemical make-up. Ammonium Thioglycolate is the main ingredient in Thermal reconditioning. Sodium hydroxide is the main ingredient in a typical relaxer. Thio-based systems can be used as a comb through straightening but are temporary. When they are done with an iron they are permanent and will not revert back if done properly. Sodium relaxers are only comb through and actually work well on African American hair that has a very tight curl at the scalp. TR does not work as well on this type of hair because it would need to be done too often to prevent breakage. So depending on your hair type, both types of products have a purpose. As a warning, Thio and Sodium straighteners do not mix, so one can not go over the other. Hope this helps to explain a little better.
