Subject: An Amazing BKT Experience
Date: January 15, 2008 at 6:15 pm PST
Before I describe my experience, I want everyone to know that I don't work for any salon or stylist. I'm a professor (at Hunter College in NYC) who used to have hideously frizzy hair that always looked dreadful and that was very damaged from all the processes I’d tried over the years (reverse perms, straightening at an Afro-American salon, ironing it daily, etc). But last year, I couldn’t stand looking in the mirror any more, so I went online and used my research skills to examine every “respectable” salon in the tri-state hair that did thermal reconditioning. I chose Capelli D’Oro (in Manhattan) based on everything I read about the experience of the owner, Leslie Correa, and I booked a consultation. After a few minutes of talking to Leslie, I knew I had chosen wisely: He stopped me and said, “I sense how terribly nervous you are. Please trust me. I promise that I’ll be totally honest with you and I won’t do anything to damage your hair.” And he was true to his word: He refused to do thermal reconditioning because he felt it would break my hair, but he strongly urged me to try a BKT because it would straighten my hair AND make it healthier. I was very skeptical, but I decided to trust him. And I’m glad I did because for the first time in 55 years, I have beautiful soft straight hair that doesn’t frizz when it gets wet or when I sweat. Every time I wash my hair, I expect it to return to its former state, and I’m always shocked when it doesn’t: It always dries straight without any frizz. I have now had three BKTs done by Leslie, and each one made my hair feel and look healthier. (He didn’t feel I needed another one so soon; I wanted it because I wanted even the half-inch of roots that grew in to be straight). And Leslie is also coloring it now—every three weeks because I’m totally gray, and the gray grows in quickly. So after a life time of misery, I’m thrilled! I have soft, silky straight hair that is the exact golden brown color I wanted (and—as Leslie predicted—I even have natural highlights now). Leslie and is staff are consummate professionals; they’ve made me feel beautiful for the first time in my life. (If you want to talk in person, put a note under my door at Hunter, room 1212 West.) By the way, I’ve also been pleased by Leslie’s honest responses to people’s questions about BKT’s safety. Having done the research, I knew that there is no such thing as a formaldehyde-free BKT; the cystine in keratin will rot if it’s not kept in a preservative, and the best preservative is formaldehyde. But Leslie explained that there’s been a lot of misinformation about the product and that the issue isn’t the fact that BKT uses formaldehyde, but rather the percent of this chemical that is used. Some salon’s BKT products are as high as 3%, but the product Leslie uses has less than the 0.2% approved by the FDA.
