Who am I? What am I? What does life have in store for me? And how do I succeed? These are common questions we all seek answers for! Dr. John Chirban found some profound principles from such American notables as Tom Hanks, Ron Howard, Diane Sawyer, Sandra Day O’Connor, and Maya Angelou. In his groundbreaking book “True Coming of Age”, Dr. Chirban puts forth fundamentals for fulfillment and purpose that identifies three key aspects of our nature in order to create a setting for authentic change. These connections include:
- THE SPHERE: How you connect with your true self. This is your emotions, your thoughts, and the 7 intrinsic qualities defined by the good Doctor as: spontaneity, reasoning, creativity, free will, spirituality, discernment, and love.
- THE OTHER SPHERE: How to build and examine all the relationships you are in. The degree to which we are able to make emotional engagement with others depends on how much influence out True Self, exerts on our self.
- HE GOD SPHERE: How you bring faith, spirit, and spirituality, as gained through your religious beliefs, existential ideas, belief systems, and ideas of a higher power, into all our relationships.
But then you have to connect all the parts of your life to direct your actions, and here Dr. C helps us expand self-awareness with:
- Recognizing and accepting your 7 intrinsic gifts.
- Understanding your true self.
- Understanding what leads to fulfillment
- Understanding the importance of your relationship to yourself, others, and God.
- Understanding the relationship between True Self and our purpose.
- Creating meaningful relationships.
- Knowing if we guide our life in accordance with our beliefs: Do we have a personal relationship with God?
A couple of good examples of these relationships come from folks like little Opi from “The Andy Griffith Show” turned Director of blockbuster movies… Ron Howard. Ron told Dr. Chirban how his relationship with his father nurtured his creativity and supported his discovery of his True Self.
Another success story comes from Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor who was motivated to gain respect among her colleagues, peers, and the American public. She finds it extremely satisfying to help others with their problems. Quoting Teddy Roosevelt, she described happiness as “work worth doing.”
To be self-aware we need to know our individual characteristics, including our temperament and personality, our virtues, habits, and hobbies, and all that we have acquired. True Coming Of Age leads us along the path to authentic living. It requires us to discover and understand who we are, evaluate our personal commitments in relationships, and recognize our connection to our soul. Dr. Chirban is Clinical Instructor at The Cambridge Health Alliance at Harvard Medical School. His credentials alone can fill a column, but suffice to say, with the names he has talked to, he gets it from the people doing and getting things done!
