Pretty picture isn't it? But can all this be accomplished by one, yes
one, nutrient? Robert Crayhon says it can in "The Carnitine
Miracle". Crayhon is a Clinician, Researcher, and Educator
who was called one of the top ten Nutritionists in the country
by "Self" Magazine. He is also Associate Editor of "Total Health"
Magazine.
I've been doing Radio and TV for a number of years, and honestly,
I've never heard of Carnitine. But I was willing to listen…never
too old to learn something new. So I interviewed Robert Crayhon
on my "POPPOFF" Radio Show. I figured there might be a whole bunch
more folks out there who might not have heard of this Carnitine
thing. So let's get right to it. What is Carnitine? According
to Crayhon, it is one of the nutrients that helps turn food into
energy. It's similar to B vitamins. But wait, Carnitine is not
a vitamin because the body actually makes it in small amounts.
Mr C went on to say it's not an Amino Acid either, but it's sometimes
called that. Amino Acids are building blocks that form the proteins
that make up hair, nails, immune cells, and other body structures.
Since it doesn't have an Amino group, Carnitine can't be called
that either.
All right already. Now I know what it isn't. How about what it
is! Crayhon explained that it's a nutrient that does something
no other nutrient can do. I loved his description. "It's a forklift,
picking up fats and dropping them off where the body burns them."
Preferably not my hips. Here's the part I really liked. "Carnitine
keeps the energy furnaces going full blast in our cells so we
can have maximum energy, high health, and long life." Here…Here!!!
By the way, Crayhon also describes Acetyl-L-Carnitine, a form
of Carnitine that has been demonstrated to optimize brain function
and to slow the progression of Alzheimer's Disease. Talk about
a miracle.
Let's say I'm sold. I needed to know how I can get this little
gem into my body…perhaps without another pill to take? It's found
predominantly in meat and animal products. Red meat is the best
source. I just happened to be writing this article after I had
eaten a delicious Pot Roast and feeling guilty. You know all the
stuff about red meat and the like. I felt better at once. However,
Mutton and Lamb have the highest levels. Chicken and Turkey have
it too…just not as high. Milk and Dairy products have it…but a
lot less.
But here's the rub. Mr C added that the Carnitine that our body
makes and the stuff we get in food doesn't give us all the real
health benefits. We've got to get optimal amounts for optimal
health. And if we are not meat gluttons, then what? You guessed
it…supplements.
In his book "The Carnitine Miracle", Robert tells us the
Top Ten Kinds of people who might benefit from Carnitine. See
if you fit any of the categories. I SURE DID !!!
|
1) |
Those who need more energy. Those who are always tired
should rule out other medical problems like thyroid
etc. |
|
2) |
Those who want to lose weight. Well…duh!! Who doesn't.
Combined with a low carb diet , Carnitine is most useful. |
|
3) |
Those who want to promote heart health. Combined with
CoQ10, Vitamin E, magnesium, and herbs like cactus and
hawthorn, Carnitine heads up a list of key heart promoters.
|
|
4) |
Athletes. Carnitine promotes maximum endurance and peak
performance in aerobic sports. Not good to want to nap
after my workout. |
|
5) |
Those who want optimal immune function. Carnitine energizes
the cells of the immune system to better protect you
and increases the number of protective white blood cells. |
|
6) |
Lactating women and infants. It's an absolutely essential
nutrient for babies to get, either through breastmilk
or formula. |
|
7) |
Vegetarians of all ages, especially those who consume
no animal products of any kind. Since animal products
are the only foods that contain appreciable amounts
of Carnitine, strict vegetarians have a special need
to take Carnitine supplements for optimal health. |
|
8) |
Those who want maximal brain health and want to prevent
loss of brain function throughout your life. Acetyl-L-Carnitine
is one of the most important brain longevity nutrients
we have. Boy, could I use this one. |
|
9) |
Those who are under stress. Like who isn't, right? Carnitine
and Acetyl-L-Carnitine help protect the body from the
damaging effects of stress which can cause faster aging. |
|
10) |
Those with a range of other ailments…male infertility,
cancer, AIDS, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, and liver
problems. Don't know about you guys, but I hit at least
six of those targets. How about you? |
|
Now don't get panicky, Mr. C does have a fairly easy eating plan
in his book. He says it's based on what we Homo Sapiens munched
on for the past 2.6 million years until 10,000 years ago. It's
the diet our bodies were designed for.
|
1) |
Eat protein at each meal. |
|
2) |
Eat good fats, particularly Omega-3 fats found in Tuna,
Salmon, and Flaxseed oil. |
|
3) |
Eat fewer carbohydrates. |
|
4) |
Eat whole foods…cooked minimally…whenever possible. |
|
So
I guess if you want to feel better and live longer, you might
want to give Robert Crayhon's book "The Carnitine Miracle"a
whirl. Good foods…bad foods…we need to know about them all. I
liked how Robert summed up our interview, "Don't avoid foods because
they are bad. Include foods and supplements because they are good.
Once your body gets a taste of health, it will want more of it."
I'm all for that!!!
