Defy
Aging
|
Remember
the words from the song "Fame"…
I'm gonna' live forever? Well, maybe not forever,
but
Dr. Michael Brickey author of "Defy Aging"
says 150 is possible.
Did
you know that since 1900, we have gained an average
of 110 days a year? Our life expectancy has increased
62% in the last century in the U.S. Healthcare advances,
better education, and increased financial and informational
resources will enable lots of us to live well past
100. And according to Dr. Brickey, Genetic Engineering
could extend that even longer. Dr. Brickey is a Psychologist
and Life coach, as well as Editor of "The Independent
Practitioner". His dream, and so his life, is devoted
to helping people do things they didn't think they
could do.

So
what kind of control do you think we have over our longevity?
Would you believe only 30% of our life span is Genetic, and that
proportion will decrease with Genetic Engineering. WOW!!! Do you
realize the other 70% is up to each of us! What a responsibility!
But Dr. B does ask some very profound questions in "Defy
Aging" like "Are you ready to live several decades longer
than your parents?" Will your added life be racked with pain,
memory loss, depression, lack of vitality, and tons of medication?
Bottom line…do we know the ABC's that will keep us happy and motivated
as we reach for that longer life? The tools are in "Defy Aging."
Lord knows, at age 140, we don't want to have been vegetating
for 70 years. And here comes Dr B to the rescue that is
if you take his ABC's to heart…that's ATTITUDE, BELIEFS, AND COPING
SKILLS…to outrun Father Time.
Let's
start with the four ATTITUDES:
|
1. |
Optimism pretty much speaks for itself |
|
2. |
Gratitude is a given |
|
3. |
Dealing with it…versus obsessing, procrastinating, and holding
on to grievances |
|
4. |
Embracing life long learning and change |
Okay,
I can do these. It's common sense. What they mean to me is turn
that frown into a smile, get off your duff and make something
of your life. Let go of the old and let in the new and be grateful
you can!
Then we got into the BELIEFS
and I was flabbergasted that he had 36 of these puppies! So here
goes:
|
1. |
1.
My mind is a muscle and I keep it fit and strong my whole
life |
|
2. |
I
can have a sexually fulfilling life my whole life |
|
3. |
I
practice continuous quality improvement with my mental and
physical health |
|
4. |
I
listen to my body and proactively foster good health |
|
5. |
I
always have a mission |
|
6. |
I
search for the smart way to do things |
|
7. |
My mind, body, and spirit are constantly renewing themselves
|
|
8. |
I cultivate my sense of humor |
|
9. |
I cultivate a positive vocabulary |
|
10. |
I cultivate fond memories and let bad memories wither |
|
11. |
Any suggestions of surgery prompt an intense search for alternative
solutions |
|
12. |
I move like a 20 year old |
|
13. |
I exercise my eyes to improve my vision |
|
14. |
I am a lifelong learner |
|
15. |
Every age has its benefits |
|
16. |
I expect to have an enjoyable, exciting life at 150 |
|
17. |
I am a trailblazer who leaves behind conventional thinking
about longevity |
|
18. |
I have a serenity about outliving most people I know |
|
19. |
I make new friends all my life |
|
20. |
I'm really younger than my chronological age |
|
21. |
I pace myself - I'm going to be around a long time |
|
22. |
I choose life enhancing risks and reduce risks with little
benefit |
|
23. |
I use the serenity prayer to give me perspective |
|
24. |
I am cheerful |
|
25. |
I have a contingency fund |
|
26. |
I observe and follow what works for me rather than blindly
following generic or expert advice |
|
27. |
The
resources for living longer are improving every year |
|
28. |
There
are no accidents in life |
|
29. |
29.
I don't need many material things to make me happy and successful
|
|
30. |
If
I intelligently pursue what I love, the money will come |
|
31. |
People want to help |
|
32. |
I can get everything in life I want if I just help enough
other people get what they want |
|
33. |
If I lock in my intent, the universe will provide |
|
34. |
Anything I need to know is available to me - in a book, library,
the Internet, other people, and myself |
|
35. |
Most problems are just inconveniences or challenges |
|
36. |
We
are fortunate to live in a longevity revolution |
Boy,
I made it through all 36, and what I got from this lot is use
that muscle God gave us called a brain. It's made to grow, expand,
and develop to an unbelievable level. All you have to do is remember,
if you don't use it…you lose it, right? You bet I'm right!
Okay, now that we are motivated beyond belief, got to have
those COPING SKILLS. These
are the keys to opening any door we choose. Sooooooooo:
|
1. |
Continually renewing your sense of purpose |
|
2. |
Having a serenity about the deaths of friends and family |
|
3. |
Effectively dealing with change |
|
4. |
Developing and sustaining a rewarding marriage or dealing
with intimate relations beginning and ending |
I'm
not sure that some of these tenets don't overlap, but that's okay
since we all need to be reminded again and again until it becomes
almost automatic.
In essence, change is absolute. It keeps us fresh and moving forward
to that 150 mark…and maybe beyond?
Getting stuck in a past rut is no way to live 150 or even 50 years.
Bottom line…you have to constantly develop the attributes we were
given by God…mental, emotional, and physical…to carry the banner
and beat the age barrier. You do want to live longer, healthier,
and happier than you ever dreamed don't you?
