Alzheimer's
Cavalry

ACTION
TO TAKE
Be
of good cheer. The Alzheimer's cavalry is on the
way. Alzheimer's researchers predict there is a
good chance we will have a vaccine to prevent Alzheimer's
disease within ten years.

WHY?
In 1999 the prestigious journal Nature published an article about
how mice were given the gene for Alzheimer's and a vaccine that
prevented the mice from getting Alzheimer's. When the vaccine
was given to mice that already had Alzheimer's it even reversed
some of the damage.
Alzheimer's is characterized by a build up of Beta-amyloid proteins
as plaque in the brain cells. The vaccine is a synthetic form
of the beta-amyloid combined with immune boosting medicines that
are injected into the arm. The theory is that the vaccine programs
the immune system to recognize the beta-amyloid proteins as a
foreign substance and remove them.
Clinical trials with people are very promising. In a British clinical
trial with 75 people receiving multiple doses, the vaccine was
well tolerated, produced no side effects, and is producing an
immune response in at least some of the subjects.
The research suggests that "the cavalry is on the way" for curing
Alzheimer's disease. We need to take good care of ourselves now
so we can benefit from such advances. Research has shown that
intellectual activity slows the progression of Alzheimer's. It
is one way we can take good care of our brains until the cavalry
comes.

Aging Quote:
Everyone complains of lack of memory, but no one of his
lack of judgment.

Defy Aging Humor:
. . . . .A friend asked, "Does your husband remember
your anniversary?" She replied, "No, I remind him
every January and July. That way I get two presents a
year."
There seems to be a variation of Alzheimer's disease that
is very selective--it just affects politicians accused
of wrong doing.
