It’s getting to be that time of year when we thank those that have helped us throughout the year. For some it may be in the form of money, but for others it may be in the form of a small gift such as chocolates. What you give them depends on how long you have known them and the extent of your relationship. Most people are happy with monetary gifts but the people at the shop that have done your laundry would be better off with candy that all can share in. Here are some “tips” so that you can be gracious and thankful to those that made a difference for you the holiday season.

  • Be sure to say thank you and happy holidays to your secretary or if a department has a secretary, then him or her. I have known our department administrative assistant for approximate 13 years so it is more of a friendship. I give her sweaters, jewelry or that sort. If you haven’t known them long perhaps a Visa gift card may be better suited.

  • If you live in an apartment building that has a doorman perhaps a bottle of wine, a fine liquor or port would be suitable. Again, a Visa gift card for a specified amount would be suitable.

  • The laundry or dry cleaners are also an entity that should be thanked if you use them on a regular basis. Probably a box of chocolates that all can enjoy or baked goodies would be welcomed.

  • Your auto mechanic is also someone to consider. I have one that is a sole proprietor and when I have been in a bind he has been there and has given 110%. A Visa gift card and liquor are good ideas. If you have an idea of their size, clothing, like a sweater would be appropriate. Again, it depends on how long you have known them.

  • Your gardener should also be remembered at Christmas. Consider giving them cash or check for the amount of their monthly charge or if they have just started give them $25 as a token of your appreciation.

  • Your hairdresser is also someone to remember at Christmas. Since most of us give them a tip each time, consider giving them something like an interesting picture frame. Again, it depends on how long you have known them and if the extent of your relationship is beyond the shop you get your hair done. If you go to a barber regularly, consider a fine bottle of liquor, tickets to a game, or a Visa gift card.

  • Your boss and co-workers also must be remembered during the holidays. Depending on your relationship, consider giving them a pen set or other office related gifts. To your colleagues and peers consider chocolates, wine or Christmas cards, your gesture will be sincerely appreciated.

  • Don’t forget your mail services provider. Some fresh baked goods or a financial gift would be well suited. If you use a mail service company such as Fedex Kinkos or The UPS store you will want to bring them food that can be enjoyed by all.

  • If you use a cleaning service and there is one individual that services your home or office, say thank you with a financial gift.

Anyone that has provided service to you on a regular basis throughout the year, Christmas is the time to say “thank you” for a job well done. Whether it is your driver, your assistant, janitor, or seamstress, your extra recognition to them will be sincerely appreciated.
