The Pretty Pit Stop: Borrowing Blush Without Blushing

RABIYA KASSAM-ADAMS had neither makeup nor time. She had already checked out of the hotel in San Francisco where she had been staying on business and was minutes away from a dinner date with a friend she had not seen in a year. And so, with the clock ticking and her face still bare, Ms. Kassam-Adams, a 23-year-old administrative assistant in New York City, shouldered one bag and wheeled another into the Sephora store in Union Square to make a beauty pit stop.
She went first to the Stila display for foundation, then headed to the Paul & Joe area for lipstick and to Shiseido for a bit of gloss to give it shine. Finally she towed her luggage over to the perfume, misted herself with Burberry Weekend and left the store to hail a cab.
Like Clark Kent dashing into a phone booth, Ms. Kassam-Adams has made many such transformations on the run: not to save lives, of course, but to save face. She has picked her way around the aisles of countless other Sephora stores, used makeup samples while standing in front of mirrors at airport duty-free shops, and helped herself to hand lotion at the Body Shop.
