Champs-Elysées, at Home on Madison

WHEN Hermès opened its 22,000-square-foot store at Madison Avenue and 62nd street in 1999, there was a small sigh of relief among the more aesthetically concerned - oh, I'll just come out and say it - the snootier neighbors. The building, a landmark limestone mansion built in the 1920's, had been home to a branch of the Limited, and there was a jarring disconnect between the $8 hoop earrings sold there and the majestic environment.

The Hermès store, on the Upper East Side, carries plenty of the trademark scarves, along with a Birkin or two.

The goods on sale now at Hermès are a better fit in the luxurious space, with its skylights, spiral staircase and custom-made leather handrails. But one of the continuing charms of Hermès, as at any serious purveyor of high-quality merchandise, is that there are baubles of many prices.

A shopper of humble means can buy eau de parfum or a silk tie, leaving with the totemic burnt-orange bag to signal one's participation in the mercantile riot of Madison Avenue. And the wealthy might spend $5,000 on a men's suede jacket, or tens of thousands on a Birkin handbag (although the storied waiting list for a made-to-order bag is now closed).

My name is Melissa and I'm addicted to shoes. How do you know if you have a shoe-shopping addiction? Take a few moments to consider the following. Do you consider a pair of shoes marked down from $750 to $450 a great deal? Do you talk to your shoes as if they were people? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then welcome to the club. Cosmetics Counter Samples: Beauty Or Bacteria?

A dab of eyeshadow and a swipe of lipstick may be giving you more than a pretty face. News 5's Amy Wagner investigated Tri-state cosmetic counters and the results made some women think twice about sampling makeup.

Kelly White, like many women, has always done the same thing when walking past a makeup counter.

"Before, I would have never thought about it," White said. "(I) would have just gone ahead and used it."

There are so many choices, so many colors and the only way to choose the right one is to test it out. But when shoppers bring home that perfect shade of lipstick, could they also be getting something a shade worse?

News 5 took an undercover camera into Tri-state department stores and took swabs of counter samples of lipstick mascara and eyeshadow.

The Ins and Outs of Going Straight

Monica Forman liked the look of straighter hair but didn't want to deal with using a flatiron every morning to tame her curls. She figured thermal reconditioning (TR) - even though it cost $500 - would be worth it. At first, it was. After the hours-long straightening process her ringlets were gone, replaced by shiny stick-straight hair, and she loved it.

But her excitement was short-lived. Soon the reality of her new straight locks set in. Rather than being easier to manage, she says, her hair was harder to deal with. It actually took more time to style because it had lost most of its body. The process dried out and damaged her hair so much that within a month of the treatment she cut off five inches. And she lost the option of going curly - something she had taken for granted all her life.
