America's most common cancer is an equal opportunity killer but it attacks men and women differently.

Here's the facts, according to the latest research:

Fact: Overall, more men than women get skin cancers. But women, under the age of 40, develop them more frequently than men, possibly because of their sun tanning habits. It's the number 1 cancer among white women, age 25-29.

Fact: Malignant melanoma, is the most dangerous and often fatal form of skin cancer for men and women.

Women Tend To Develop Skin Cancer On:

Legs and Feet

• Women develop 3 times as many melanomas and basal cell carcinomas on the legs as men Age Factors
• More women than men under 40 develop skin cancer.
• Malignant melanoma is the leading cancer in Caucasian Women between age 25-29
• It is second only to breast cancer in women, ages 30-35 Survival
• Women have a better overall cure rate than men
• Women tend to discover their skin cancers earlier, thus improving their chances for successful treatment

Men Tend To Develop Skin Cancer On:

Scalp and Ears

• Men are 2-3 times more likely To develop cancer in these areas
• Squamous cell carcinoma is also detected here

Face

• Men are 2 times as likely to develop cancer on the left side of their faces
• Note: when you drive, your left side is more exposed to light

Nose

• Men have 1 1/2 times as many squamous carcinomas of the nose than women

Chest, Back, Shoulders

• The prime areas for malignant melanoma in men
• Men develop 1 1/2 times as many melanomas on their backs as women

Age Factors

• More men over 50 will develop and die
• From malignant melanoma than women
