Using
herbs and natural ingredients to make your own remedies at home is fun,
easy, time effective, and inexpensive. Items that you make to comfort
yourself and your family also makes loving gifts for others.
Lavender Tincture for Stress Reduction
Here is a sweet little tincture to use for stress reduction and to aid
sleeping. Harvest time is almost here and lavender plants are just finishing
their bloom. If you do not have a plant, visit your local nursery or a
friend that is a grower.
You
will need
|
» |
5 medium stalks of fresh lavender |
|
» |
¾ cup of 90 proof vodka or other clear low-odor 90 proof drinking
alcohol |
Chop the lavender into ¼ inch strips and gently "bruise"
the plant by "hammering" gently wit your fist on a wood cutting board
(a mortar and pestle for you pro's). Put the alcohol in an amber or dark
glass bottle, then stuff in the cut and bruised lavender. Place the cap
on the bottle and shake vigorously for 2 minutes. Set in a cool, dark
place for 6 weeks (shake for a minute or so 1 time a week). Strain the
tincture from the plant pieces remaining, and then store in a cool dark
place. Shelf life is approx. 1 year.
To use: Drop a few drops on your temples or dab on a hankie and
place under your pillowcase between your pillow and your pillowcase for
sweet dreams.
Puffy
Eye Soother
Take Mother Nature's two best ingredients for removing
red, puffy skin (cucumber and potato), add sage tea and some cold from
the arctic, and you will have a wonderfully effective treatment for swollen
puffy eyes.
You will need
|
» |
¼
small raw potato, peeled |
|
» |
½
of a medium-sized cucumber, peeled |
|
» |
1
sage tea bag (or 1 full stalk of sage fresh from your garden |
|
» |
1
chamomile tea bag (or 1 teaspoon fresh cut chamomile flowers) |
|
» |
½ cup hot water |
Slice the potato into two chunks and then mash into pieces
in a food processor to get them as fine as possible. Add the cut up cucumber
to the processor and blend to a fine pulp. Strain the excess juice and
keep the "pulpy" part.
Make the tea with ½ cup hot water (put in both herbs and let steep for
10 minutes (strain this mixture).
Now combine the potato-cucumber pulp with the 1-cup tea. Mix well. Pour
into ice cube trays and freeze.
The next time your eyes are puffy, red, or sore, pop one of these ice
cubes on your eyes and leave on for a couple of minutes (or simply "dab"
them on, if your are unable to leave them on for that long), rinse your
eyelids off, and pat dry. You won't believe your eyes! Puffy and red,
goodbye!
