Beauty 911
This
is the season for sunning, swimming and long, lazy vacation
days. It can also be the season for sunburn, insect
bites, heat rash and chlorine-damaged hair. Over the
course of the summer, one or more of these body blemishes
could happen to you. Here's some advice to help you
overcome - perhaps even prevent - summer beauty emergencies |

Swimming
Pool Haircare
Pool
chemicals and chlorine are harsh, and can be damaging to your hair. Wetting
your hair with fresh water before you swim will keep strands from soaking
up too much chlorinated water. Additionally, wear a bathing cap whenever
possible. Post-swim always remember to rinse your hair. If you hair gets
a greenish tint - often a reaction between the copper water pipes and
chlorine in the pool - use the following recipe to restore your natural
color.

Deep Cleansing Treatment
Ingredients
2 Tbsp baking soda
¼ cup fresh lemon juice
1 tsp mild shampoo
Directions:
Thoroughly
mix all ingredients. Wet hair and massage with mixture; making
sure all the ends are coated. Cover head with a plastic bag
or shower cap, and leave on for 20 minutes. Rinse, and shampoo
as usual.
Yield:
2 ounces or one treatment |

Sun Sense
Slip,
Slop, Slap is a popular summer campaign in Australia, aimed at educating
the public on skin cancer prevention - slip on a shirt; slop on some sunscreen;
and slap on a cap. Always wear sunscreen, to protect your skin and hair.
However, if you do get sunburn, there are some easy home remedies to help
take away the sting. Keeping your body well hydrated will also help your
skin heal faster.

Sunburn Soothers
Ingredients
Plain
yogurt
Club soda
Buttermilk
Tomato juice
Witch hazel
White wine
Cucumber juice
Aloe vera gel
Vinegar (dilute 1 tbsp in 1 cup water)
Directions:
Apply
any one of the above ingredients directly to your skin, or
add to a tepid bath. Some of the soothers may dry out your
skin, so follow up with a water-based moisturizer.

Bikini
Line Bumps
If
you shave quickly or carelessly, without moisturizing the sensitive skin
around your bikini line, you may notice a rash of tiny red bumps. A quick
and effective cure is chamomile tea bags. First, cleanse the area with
soap and water. Then lie down and place cool, damp tea bags over the irritated
skin. Chamomile contains anti-inflammatory properties, so it is very calming
to your skin.
Bug Off
If
you happen to get bitten by a pesky insect, mix a paste of baking soda,
water and a little lemon juice to soothe your bite. This old-fashioned
remedy is especially helpful for bee and wasp stings. Egg white applied
to the skin will also relieve the itch of insect stings and bites.
Beat
the Heat
Heat
rash or prickly heat can occur any time conditions prevent perspiration
from evaporating. To soothe heat rash, bathe with a soapless cleanser
and dry your skin thoroughly. The best way to prevent heat rash is to
stay cool. Choose light clothing, made from loosely woven fabrics. You
may also want to use cornstarch as a body powder. Try this cinnamon scented
body powder to stay cool and dry.

Cooling Cinnamon Powder
Ingredients
¼ cup cornstarch
¼ cup rice flour
1 tbsp cinnamon
Directions:
Mix
ingredients together until thoroughly blended. Then pour the
mixture into a clean, dry jar with a few holes punched in
the lid. Sprinkle the powder on your skin before dressing,
or over your bedsheets
for good night's sleep.
Yield:
4 ounces
