Hot Hair: Lock Up A New Look For Summer

Hot Hair: Lock Up A New Look For Summer

Stripe it rich

For hot summer nights, rainbow-colored hair streaks are the coolest. Go red, purple, blue, green. Earn your stripes the easy way, with temporary hair dyes, clip on extensions or the color wands made by Revlon, Dior and others that let you stripe and swipe at will. Think Jennifer Love Hewitt, Lil' Kim, Courtney Love.

Tip: One or two streaks of color just on the tips make the most impact - more and you'll look like a zebra.

Chunk it up

Spring's freshest new short 'do's feature lots of detailing - ask for a cut with shaggy layers, chunks or feathers all around the face and neckline - the perfect counter-point to Summer's ruffled necklines and sheer, see-through layers. Think Meg Ryan, Winona Ryder, Rene Russo, Goldie Hawn, Hilary Swank.

Tip: Not a do-it-yourself job. Those casual-looking wisps need precision cutting by a professional to fall in place the way you want them. Frequent trims are mandatory.

Long Story

In contrast to the short, layered do's this season, super-long hair is also back in the picture. The newest look is to cut the ends t-square straight across - or, conversely, heat-curl them à la Goldie Locks for a tumble of curls on the ends - but leave the rest of the hair stick straight. Think Heather Graham, Brooke Shields, Jennifer Aniston, Jewel, Leelee Sobieski.

Tip: It's unlikely scalp oils will ever get down to the ends if your hair is below the shoulders, so condition, condition, condition the ends lavishly to keep them strong and smooth. Regular trims help too.

Hair Tips For Sun And Fun

Heat. Sunlight. Water. Summer can be brutal on your hair. Look for conditioning and hair spray products that promise some SPF sun protection if possible. You can also cover up with the bandanas and wide elasticized hair bands that are so cool this summer for both sexes - they're a great way to protect hair on the beach from too much sun. Spritzing on some spray-on conditioner before and after sunning helps too. Wash out chlorine or salt water as soon as possible after your daily dip in the pool or ocean. Don't comb hair vigorously when it's wet and susceptible to breakage. In fact, summer is a good season to let your hair air dry and give it a real vacation from heat styling appliances, perms and bleaching. You can also keep a cool head by braiding or putting your hair up in a ponytail. Cut the humidity frumps with silicone-based anti-frizz gels. And do look for beaded and glittery hair accessories to give even the simplest hair-do some flash and sparkle for romantic summer nights.
