Welcome
to Dress Me Up! Dress Me Down! – where I deal with issues pertaining
to personal style development.
I
sincerely hope you enjoyed last month's segment on fashion advice.
Please feel free to ask any questions. Remember there are no bad
questions. I'm here to help you with all of your fashion needs.
Listed below are frequently asked questions and answers I receive
from clients that I hope will help you get started when developing
your own personal style.
Q:
What
is the proper dress or skirt length, and is it appropriate
to wear the hemline just below the knee?
Diane
Answers: Fashion trends change every spring and fall, my suggestion
is to do what is most comfortable for you as an individual. However,
I like the visual look of the hem length just above the knee,
especially if you are shorter. I believe unless you are 5' 11"
or taller, wearing your hemline just below the knee will give
you a "matronly" appearance.
Q:
Animal
prints and leathers are very popular today, should
ladies forty and older be wearing them?
Diane
Answers: Yes, most definitely. Something to consider when
making these wardrobe choices, do you, in fact have the figure
for this dramatic dressing? You need to be sure that your
body frame will accentuate a print. Ladies dealing with hip challenges
I would advise not to wear a print.
Q:
Is
it appropriate for a woman to wear a red tie with her business
suit? What are the do's and don'ts?
Diane
Answers: I personally love the look, why not? It will make
a powerful statement, it says we can negotiate any and all business
deals in the boardroom. I say go for it.
Q:
I
have a bad heel and cannot wear any kind of heels with my clothing,
can you give me suggestions on what to do?
Diane
Answers: I understand your personal needs, don't feel alone.
There are many women with the same problem. There are very nice
fashionable flats in today's market. Make sure you wear one color
from the waist down, this will help from drawing attention to
the feet area. It will blend nicely, I promise! In today's shoe
world, there are an abundance of choices to help with the special
needs of these individuals, yet the shoe world still has a long
way to go to give people with special needs a sense of fashion
and self esteem.
Never be afraid to ask for assistance from a sales associate in
the store when looking for comfort and still looking for good
style. They can help you. It could be as simple as ordering a
special pair for you to fit your feet. Also, a good shoe repair
store can help you with minor alterations to the shoe that may
help. Although they may be limited as to what can be altered,
it's certainly worth the effort, if the end results are your feeling
good about your purchase and feeling great when wearing the shoes.
Q:
Hey Diane! I was just wondering, do you have any tips for a 16
year old who's parents don't give her a lot of cash to work with
about getting a larger or at least more varied wardrobe? Thanx!
Diane
Answers: I understand your situation and you can shop for
less than you think. Today with all the outlet stores, second
hand shops and even the goodwill, you can buy a lot more for your
money. Just get in there and look, I think you'll be surprised
at what you can find in these places. As staples in your wardrobe,
you should purchase a pair of jeans, two white shirts, two skirts,
a versatile jacket or blazer, couple of sweaters or blouses to
mix and match, and your on your way. Be sure your color scheme
is such that you can mix the articles purchased to make the wardrobe
appear more than just one outfit. For example, simply changing
a couple of different blouses with the skirt, trying different
pants with the same blouse, or adding a jacket with either. Now
you have showcased several outfits using less garments. Color
scheme should remain simple, such as, black, white, navy or gray,
using blouses, belts and costume jewelry to accent and color.
Add a pair of black boots and clogs, and you're ready for the
fall season. Maybe next summer you'll be able to find a part time
job to help mom and dad with clothing expenses, as I feel you
appreciate things more when you help earn or purchase them yourself.
Good luck!
