Q:
What is the most safe and effective way to achieve fuller
lips (mine
are very thin).
Dr.
Loftus Answers: Lip augmentation is one area in which plastic
surgeons have yet to find an ideal solution. The most popular
form of lip augmentation currently involves placing a piece of
processed human skin (Alloderm or Dermaplant) in the lips. This
provides an excellent and natural result, but shrinks over 6-12
months. At the end of a year, the lips appear as they did before
the augmentation. Because the results last less than one year,
this technique is certainly not ideal.
Another option is collagen injections, but this is even shorter
lived, lasting about 2 months. Goretex implants are yet another
option. They are permanent and will not shrink. Unfortunately,
they may push out of the lips, and even if they don't, they can
feel unnatural.
I believe the most natural and longest lasting option may be through
fat injection. But, be very careful, as few plastic surgeons are
skilled in making the results smooth, natural, and lasting. If
you do find a surgeon who is skilled at this, your results may
be natural and permanent, but there is a limit to how large your
lips can be made. Best of luck!
