Q:
I have inverted nipples and am self-conscious when I wear a tank
top or am going topless on the beach. What
can be done? Who should I see?
Dr.
Loftus Answers: Inverted nipples are a common problem: instead
of the nipple sticking outward, it is pulled inward, into the
breast. Therefore, instead of having a visible nipple through
clothing, women with inverted nipples have a dimple. This problem
is due to fibrous bands within the breast, which tether the nipple
inward. Cutting these bands will allow the nipple to point outward
once again. These bands may be cut ("released" as plastic surgeons
say) through a minor procedure in which an incision is made
around the nipple. Recovery is fast: you may return to work immediately,
and you may be back on the beach (topless or otherwise) within
a week or two.
One drawback is that releasing (cutting) the bands may
also result in cutting nerves to the nipple with resultant decreased
sensation to the nipple (temporarily or permanently). So,
it is possible that you may end up with numb nipples as a result
of this procedure--- something to make you think twice. Best of
luck with this! You will be able to find a plastic surgeon in
your area by way of www.plasticsurgery.org.
