Q: I wear a 34AA bra and want breast enlargement. The surgeon I saw recommended that I have liposuction and then have the fat injected into my breasts. The photos he showed were very impressive and natural. Should I have this done, and why is this technique less popular than implants? Thank you.

Dr. Loftus Answers: Beware! Fat injection of the breast is not advised for breast augmentation because of long-term problems that this technique may cause. The injected fat particles can attract calcium deposits, which, on mammogram can be easily confused with breast cancer. Understand that the fat does not cause breast cancer, but it can make the breast appear as though it has microscopic breast cancer on mammogram.

So, if you have fat injection in your breast and develop calcifications, you and your doctors may not be able to tell if the calcifications are from cancer or your fat injection. In order to prove they are from the fat, you may need one or more breast biopsies, which you presumably would not have needed otherwise.

Alternatively, what if you do develop breast cancer amidst all of your fat calcifications? A new cancer would be harder to detect and might go undiagnosed because you and your doctors might assume that it is just more calcifications from the fat. For these reasons, fat injection for breast augmentation is strongly discouraged by most reputable surgeons.
