Q: Is hypertrophic scarring a potential problem following eyelid surgery for those who form hypertrophic scars elsewhere?

Dr. Loftus Answers: Hypertrophic scars are thick, wide, unsightly scars that often develop following surgery or lacerations of the elbows, shoulders, knees, thighs, back, neck, chest and abdomen. Development of hypertrophic scars is dependent on skin thickness: the thicker the skin (back, chest, thighs), the more likely hypertrophic scars will develop. It is also dependent on tension: areas of the body susceptible to high skin tension such as the elbows, knees, and shoulders nearly always leave unfavorable scars, even in those who typically scar well. Because the eyelids have the thinnest skin and because there is no tension, they tend to heal very very well, even in those who have had problems with hypertrophic scarring in the past. In fact, I have NEVER seen hypertrophic scarring of the eyelids. Best of luck to the person who asked this question! If you have eyelid surgery, please let me know how you did and whether you were pleased with your decision to proceed.
