Q:
Can
abdominoplasty be performed at the same time as a scheduled cesarean
section?
Dr.
Loftus Answers: It is technically possible, and some surgeons
may offer this combination, but I think you would be better off
waiting about six months between operations. There are several
reasons for this. First, your skin and abdominal wall will tighten
somewhat after the baby has been born. If you are lucky, you may
find that the abdominoplasty is not as necessary as you once thought.
Also, abdominoplasty is a large operation to consider when you
also have a new baby for which to care. Recovering from an abdominoplasty
AND C-section together is quite a bit more than recovering from
C-section alone. Because of this, you may also be at higher risk
for complications. Finally, it is possible that, because your
tissues are maximally stretched at the end of your pregnancy,
abdominoplasty at that time may result in a compromised cosmetic
result. If you do choose to have these procedures performed at
the same time, please let me know how you did and whether you
were pleased with your decision.
