Q:
Is a breast reduction the same as a breast lift?
How do they differ in recovery and risks?
Dr.
Loftus Answers: A breast lift is a purely cosmetic procedure
and involves removal of skin only. It does not alter the size
of the breasts. A breast reduction is aimed to improve symptoms
of large breasts that may cause shoulder, neck, and back pain.
It involves removal of skin AND breast tissue. After a breast
reduction, the breast will be a smaller size. A breast lift will
not be covered by insurance. A breast reduction may be covered
by insurance, depending on how much tissue is to be removed. These
operations are similar in that they both may leave you with scars
around your nipples, below your nipples, and possibly along your
breast crease. Both have risks of healing (especially in smokers),
unsightly scars, nipple numbness, nipple asymmetry, and unevenness
between sides. Other risks exist, but these are the most common.
You should see a plastic surgeon who offers both procedures and
he or she will be able to help you decide which procedure is best
for you.
