Q:
Does hyperbaric oxygen therapy help scars fade, flatten or mature
faster?
Dr.
Loftus Answers: Thank you for your question! There is alot
of hype on the internet, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT)
for improvement of scars is just another example of hype. Hyperbaric
oxygen, when administered under proper medical supervision, can
help non-healing wounds heal. It does not, however, reduce scarring,
flatten scars, or contribute to softer, more mature scars.
Moreover, the HBOT available from anyone other than a physician
is likely to be completely bogus because the pressure achieved
is only a fraction of that achieved with legitimate HBO chambers.
Thanks for raising the issue -- but save your dollars. By the
way, people who claim to have improved scars with HBOT would have
had improved scars with or without the HBOT, because all scars
improve with time.
