Welcome
to Dress me Up! Dress me Down! I am asked a lot of questions pertaining
to personal style development while teaching this course.
Listed
below are just a few frequently asked questions and answers that
I hope will help you get started when developing your own personal
style.
Q:
How
do I disguise my tummy challenges?
Susan,
Chicago, Illinois
Diane
Answers:
First remember to dress monochromatic from the waist down, meaning
one color. This will help your body frame to appear taller and
slimmer. Second, make sure to wear dark, solid colors on these
areas; prints will only draw attention to problem areas. Another
helpful hint is to invest in body shapers - they work great for
all body challenges.
Q:
How
do I dress my body if I have large or
wide hips?
Cindy,
Clearwater, Florida
Diane
Answers:
This
is an area where you must get creative. First you must create
a balance. You can achieve this by widening the shoulder area
by wearing good shoulder pads. Most manufacturers include shoulder
pads in their garments; however, you may need to add more shoulder
pads to achieve this balance. Second, you should buy a classic
style blazer, meaning no double-breasted suit coats. With double-breasted
suit coats your hips will fight the garment and your buttons will
pull - this will give the appearance of you being larger. So,
build your shoulders out and wear a classic style blazer, leaving
the blazer unbuttoned to drape over the hip area.
Q:
What
color of hosiery should I
wear with my business suits?
Johnna,
Seattle, Washington
Diane
Answers:
Believe
it or not, women struggle with this area. A simple rule applies
here; your hemline, hosiery and shoes should always match or be
of one color. No exceptions, this will exclude tan hosiery. When
we are browsing through a catalog we see all of the models wearing
tan hosiery as a neutral. This is a big mistake. It will break
up the outfit, add pounds to your body frame and leave your shoes
as the focal point on your body.
Q:
When
buying a new outfit, where do I start?
Svetlana,
Detroit, Michigan
Diane
Answers:
This is a great question! We must first start with shoes; otherwise
you will spend half of your lifetime looking for the right color
of shoes to match the perfect outfit. The reason for this is because
the shoe and fashion worlds have never collaborated together on
color, so it can be extremely frustrating if you purchase the
garment first. Always buy your favorite shoes and then start the
hunt for the perfect outfit to match. You will have great success
in that order.
Special
Note:
For a put together look always make sure that your handbag, shoes
and belts stay in the same color and in the same family; suede
to suede, patent to patent.
